$150K OTE (on-target earnings) means your base salary plus your target variable pay equals $150,000 if you hit exactly 100% of quota. On a 50/50 split, that's a $75,000 base and $75,000 in target commission. Only the base is guaranteed.
Every comp software vendor on page one of Google will tell you what the letters stand for. Very few of them tell you what lands in your checking account, or what you should do with the number once you have an offer letter in hand. That's the part this post covers.
I carried a quota in tech sales before I became a financial planner, and the OTE on my offer letter was the number I repeated to everyone. It was also the number I planned around least well. The math below uses a hypothetical rep so you can swap in your own figures.

Let's TalkWhat Does $150K OTE Mean in Sales?
It means you'll earn $150,000 in total gross pay if you hit 100% of your quota for the year. OTE includes your base salary; the rest is target variable pay, which may be commission, bonus, or both. Miss quota and you earn less. Beat it and you earn more, sometimes a lot more if the plan has accelerators.
In tech sales, OTE shows up on nearly every AE and SDR posting because the base alone understates what a strong rep earns. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes in its Occupational Outlook Handbook that most employers of sales representatives pay a combination of salary and commission or salary plus bonus, and it puts the median annual wage for wholesale and manufacturing sales reps at $76,460 as of May 2025. A $150K OTE sits well above that median, which is exactly why you should read the plan behind it.
The number is also gross. Taxes, 401(k) deferrals, ramp quarters and payment timing all sit between OTE and your deposit, and I break those down in the OTE Illusion. This post stays on one question: how the same $150K behaves under different splits.
What Does a 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30 OTE Split Mean?
The split tells you what share of OTE is base salary and what share is variable. The first number is always base. A 70/30 split on $150K OTE means $105,000 in base and $45,000 in target commission.
| $150K OTE split | Base salary (guaranteed) | Target variable (at 100%) |
|---|---|---|
| 50/50 | $75,000 | $75,000 |
| 60/40 | $90,000 | $60,000 |
| 70/30 | $105,000 | $45,000 |
A 50/50 plan is common for closing roles like full-cycle AEs, where you control a lot of the outcome. Roles with longer cycles or more account management, such as some medical device, enterprise and customer success roles, tend to lean 60/40 or 70/30. Three offers can all say "$150K OTE" and hand you a $30,000 difference in guaranteed pay.
How Much Is $150K OTE Per Month After Taxes?
For a hypothetical single filer in a state with no income tax, $150K at 100% attainment works out to about $113,791 a year after federal tax and FICA, or roughly $9,483 a month on average. Nobody gets paid the average, though. Your month depends on whether a commission check landed.
Suppose the rep takes the standard deduction, skips 401(k) contributions for simplicity, and gets commission paid quarterly. Base pay is estimated using 2026 federal brackets and the $16,100 standard deduction, plus 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare. Commission checks are withheld at the flat 22% supplemental rate from IRS Publication 15, plus the same 7.65%.
| Estimated monthly take-home | 50/50 | 60/40 | 70/30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base-only month | $5,133 | $6,012 | $6,891 |
| Quarterly commission check (gross, at 100%) | $18,750 | $15,000 | $11,250 |
| Commission check after withholding (70.35%) | $13,191 | $10,553 | $7,914 |
| Month a commission check lands | $18,324 | $16,565 | $14,805 |
That swing is the whole problem. On the 50/50 plan, eight months a year look like $5,133 and four months look like $18,324, and the rep who sets rent and a car payment during a big month is sizing their life to a number that shows up a third of the time.
April adds one more line. Federal tax on $150,000 comes to $24,734 under the 2026 single brackets, since the top $28,200 of taxable income lands in the 24% bracket. The estimated withholding above totals $24,170 on all three splits, leaving about $564 owed. Setting aside an extra 10% of each commission check on top of the 22% withheld covers that with plenty to spare ($7,500 on the 50/50 plan), and whatever is left after you file goes back into your plan. The full method is in how much to set aside for taxes on commission income.
Your stub will differ with state and local tax, 401(k) and health insurance deductions, your W-4 settings, and whether commission pays monthly or quarterly. Use the table to compare splits against each other, then run your own numbers.
What Happens to $150K OTE at 70%, 100% or 130% of Quota?
Your pay moves with attainment, and a bigger variable share means a wider range. Take a hypothetical plan that pays variable in a straight line up to 100% of quota, then pays 1.5 times the normal rate on everything above 100% (an accelerator). Many real plans pay less below a threshold, so treat the 70% column as generous.
| Total gross pay | 70% of quota | 100% of quota | 130% with 1.5x accelerator |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50/50 | $127,500 | $150,000 | $183,750 |
| 60/40 | $132,000 | $150,000 | $177,000 |
| 70/30 | $136,500 | $150,000 | $170,250 |
The math on the 50/50 line: 70% of $75,000 is $52,500, so the year totals $127,500. At 130%, the first 100% pays $75,000 and the extra 30 points pay at 1.5x, which is $33,750 more, for $183,750 total. A 70% year on that plan drops estimated take-home from $113,791 to about $98,412, or roughly $8,201 a month.
The 50/50 plan has a $56,250 gap between its bad year and its great year. The 70/30 plan's gap is $33,750. Neither is better on its own; the right one depends on how confident you are in the territory and how much of your fixed spending the base can carry.
What Is a Good Quota-to-OTE Ratio?
The Bridge Group, a sales research firm that benchmarks SaaS teams, puts the median account executive quota at $960K on a $200K median OTE in its State of Sales: 2026 AE Models, Motions, & Metrics Research (June 2026). That's a quota-to-OTE ratio of 4.6x, up from 4.2x in 2024. On $150K OTE, 4.6x works out to a quota of about $690,000 in new bookings. The same report found only 48% of reps hit their annual quota in 2026, so a ratio well above the median means the company expects each rep to carry more revenue per dollar of pay, and it's worth asking why.
The ratio is a starting point for the conversation. Average deal size, sales cycle length, inbound lead flow and whether you inherit a book of existing accounts all change what a fair quota looks like, and a medical device or pharma territory won't follow SaaS math at all. The one number that cuts through all of that is how many reps on the team actually hit their quota.
Is a High OTE a Red Flag?
A high OTE becomes a red flag when the base is thin and few people on the team hit quota, because then the headline number describes the top performer's year instead of yours. That's the main disadvantage of OTE as a figure: it assumes 100% attainment and says nothing about how often that happens. Work through these before you sign:
- Get last year's quota and this year's quota. A big jump with the same territory is a warning.
- Ask what percentage of reps in this role hit 100% last year. If fewer than half did, plan around something below OTE.
- Find out how long the ramp lasts and whether quota or pay drops during it. Year one almost always comes in under OTE.
- Check for a commission cap. A cap removes the upside that justifies a heavy variable split.
- Read the clawback terms, including the window. Deals that churn can pull back commission you already spent.
- Ask whether there's a draw and whether it's recoverable. A recoverable draw gets netted against your first real commissions.
None of these kill an offer by themselves. A recruiter who can't answer them tells you something, too.

Book a callHow Should You Budget Around a $150K OTE?
Build your life on the floor and the planning income, and treat OTE as the ceiling. The planning income rule I use with every client is base plus 50% of variable. It's conservative on purpose, so every dollar you earn above it goes straight to goals.
| $150K OTE split | Base | 50% of target variable | Planning income |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50/50 | $75,000 | $37,500 | $112,500 |
| 60/40 | $90,000 | $30,000 | $120,000 |
| 70/30 | $105,000 | $22,500 | $127,500 |
Use planning income for savings targets and long-range projections. For fixed commitments like rent, a mortgage or a car payment, go one step lower to your floor: base plus your lowest realistic commission year. If you're new to the role and have no history, use 50% of your current commission pace until you have two years of data. The walkthrough is in how to calculate your commission income floor.
Then make the monthly swing disappear. Route base and commission into one high-yield savings account and pay yourself the same amount every month from it, so the $5,133 months and the $18,324 months both turn into one steady paycheck; the setup is in how to budget on commission income. Keep at least three months of fixed expenses in reserve as your emergency fund floor, then scale that up if you have dependents, own a home, carry a heavier variable split or sell in a volatile industry.
A $150K OTE is a good offer when the base covers your fixed costs and the team hits its number. If you can pay your bills on base take-home alone, every commission check becomes a decision about what to fund next.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is OTE in sales?
OTE stands for on-target earnings: the total gross pay a sales rep earns by hitting exactly 100% of quota. It combines base salary with target variable pay such as commission or bonus. It's a pre-tax number and assumes full attainment.
Does OTE include base salary?
Yes. OTE is base salary plus target variable pay. A $150K OTE on a 60/40 split includes a $90,000 base and $60,000 in target commission.
What does an OTE 70/30 split mean?
It means 70% of OTE is base salary and 30% is variable pay. On $150K OTE, that's a $105,000 base and $45,000 in target commission. The 50/50 split works the same way: half base, half variable.
What is a good OTE?
A good OTE is one the team actually reaches, with a base that covers your fixed expenses. Ask what share of reps hit quota last year. A lower OTE that most of the team hits can pay more in practice than a higher one few people reach.
What is a good quota to OTE ratio?
The Bridge Group's 2026 AE research puts the median SaaS quota-to-OTE ratio at 4.6x, which is about a $690,000 quota on $150K OTE. Deal size, cycle length and lead flow shift what's fair, so pair the ratio with the team's attainment rate; only 48% of AEs hit annual quota in 2026 in the same research.
Is a high OTE a red flag?
It can be when the base is low, quota is high relative to OTE, and few reps hit it. Ask about last year's attainment, ramp length, commission caps, clawbacks and draws before you accept.
What are the disadvantages of OTE?
OTE is a gross figure that assumes 100% attainment, so it overstates what most reps take home. It leaves out taxes, ramp periods, clawbacks and the lag between closing a deal and getting paid. Plan around base plus 50% of variable instead.
What is OTE in tech sales?
In tech sales, OTE is the base plus target commission quoted for SDR, AE and account manager roles. Full-cycle AE roles often use a 50/50 split, while account management roles tend to carry more base.
